The other option is to do the design work yourself - with the proliferation of computer based design programmes this is becoming the design choice of many custom car enthusiasts.
If you choose to use a professional to design your custom car, your first hurdle is finding the right person to work with. If there are custom car clubs in your area, it can be a good idea to contact them and discuss your ideas with other enthusiasts, asking who designed their vehicles and who they would recommend. If there are no clubs in your area, it is possible to find design companies on the internet. There are designers for all types of custom cars, and many companies that will design your car will also make or supply the parts you need to bring your project to fruition. The most important thing when working with someone else is to be clear what it is you are after - don't be afraid to point out changes that you want made. If you are working with someone via the internet, make sure to look at all drafts, and do not make a final payment until you are happy with the work that has been done.
If you are doing the design work yourself, you have different options. Some designers prefer the old method of drafting with a pencil and paper, or even just getting the parts together as they go. Many people now choose to use a computer design programme. CAD, the engineering design programme is the most popular choice, though there are many new car design programmes becoming available, some at considerable cost, others available as freeware on the internet.
