The new look for wheels: spinning car rims
The new look among wheel customizing, spinning car rims are taking off in a big way and are growing in availability among most suppliers of custom auto parts. These rims continue to spin when the vehicle has stopped. While they are sure to set your car apart wherever you are, these are still an expensive option, though as they grow in availability they are sure to come down in price. Popular with the urban car-customizing crowd, hip-hoppers, and professional athletes, these are for the car owner looking for a bling look. There is even a rap song "Ridin' Spinners" by the rap group Three 6 Mafia that is about spinners. Basketball star Latrell Sprewell has his own line of spinning wheels.
'Proper' spinning rims are made with an outer layer of chrome that floats over the main rim and spins with the help of ball bearings between it and the wheel's hub.
It is also possible to buy spinning spoke that bolt onto your existing car rims. These come in sizes from 15" upwards, and with various numbers of lugs. It is simply a case of finding a style you like, making sure it is the right size and has the right number of lugs and bolting it on! It is usually recommended that there is a 1.5" lip on the wheel when fitting a spinner. Designs range from an almost filigree style to spinners that cover most of the rim.
Spinning rims commonly come in a chrome finish, though colour spinners can be found, and gold is becoming more popular, especially with the move towards a more 'bling' look among many customizers. It is also possible to getting spinning rims with inlays made of different materials, including wood, and as they grow in popularity the choice of materials and colours is sure to expand.
